Why Jersey City backs up more than the suburbs do
Three things stack here that don't stack elsewhere, and together they explain most of the calls we take on this side of the county.

- Clay, and tired A lot of the older housing still drains to the street through original clay. Clay joints seep, roots find the water, and the line packs up over a few seasons. Cabling opens a channel; only jetting or a repair deals with what's actually in there.
- Combined sewers
- Storm and sanitary in one pipe In heavy rain the system runs at capacity, and pressure has to go somewhere. Low fixtures in below-grade units are the nearest opening. A backup that only happens during storms is usually this, not a clog in your line.
- Below-grade living space
- Garden apartments and finished basements Anything below the street is below the sewer, which makes it first in line. This is where a backwater valve stops being an upsell and starts being the actual solution.
- Multifamily conversions
- More fixtures, same old pipe A brownstone carved into four units puts four kitchens and four bathrooms on a lateral sized for one household. The pipe didn't change; the load did. That shows up as a line that clogs on a schedule.

It only backs up when it rains hard. Is that my pipe?
Often it isn't. Jersey City has combined sewers in much of the city, so storm water and sanitary share one pipe. When that system is at capacity the pressure finds the nearest low opening, which is your basement or garden-level fixtures. A backwater valve is the real fix for that, and it's a planned job rather than an emergency one.
How do I know it's the main and not one fixture?
If more than one fixture is affected, it's the main. The classic tells are the toilet bubbling when the washing machine drains, or the tub backing up when you flush. One slow sink on its own is almost always local to that fixture and a far smaller job.
Do I really need the camera, or can you just clear it?
We can clear it, and if this is the first time it's happened that's often the right call. If it has backed up before, clearing alone just resets the clock — the camera is what tells you whether you have roots, a belly, an offset joint or a lateral that's genuinely finished. That's a $195 answer to a question people otherwise pay for repeatedly.
Who's responsible, me or the city?
Generally the lateral from your building to the city main is the property owner's, and the main in the street is the city's. Where the blockage actually sits is exactly what the camera establishes, and we give you the footage and the locate depth so you have something concrete if it turns out to be on the city's side.
Will you have to dig up the sidewalk?
Not for a clearing, and often not for a repair either. Trenchless lining and pipe bursting pull new pipe through the existing path using two access pits rather than an open run. Whether that's an option depends on the pipe's condition, which is another thing the camera settles before anyone quotes you.
Can you work with my building's management?
Yes, and in multi-unit buildings we usually end up doing so. We provide a certificate of insurance, document what we find, and give you a written diagnosis stating where the failure is — which is normally the thing that decides who's paying.
