Not every struggling system needs replacing. If a repair buys you more good summers for less money, that's the recommendation you'll get, and you'll get it in writing.
Replacement usually wins when
12–15 yrs+
and the repair quote is more than about a third of what a new system costs. At that point you're spending real money to extend something that's already near the end.

Repair is the right call when
Under 10 yrs
and it's a single component — a capacitor, a contactor, a fan motor. Those are repairs at any age, and anyone quoting a whole system off the back of one is not being straight with you.

- Manual J on your house Square footage, insulation, windows, ductwork. Oversized systems short-cycle and leave the house clammy; undersized ones never catch up. Getting this right is half the job and it's the half most quotes skip.
- Permits
- Pulled and inspected Required NJ permits filed, inspection scheduled, installed to current code including electrical disconnects, refrigerant line standards and condensate handling.
- Removal
- Old system taken away Old condenser and coil removed, refrigerant recovered and disposed of legally. Floors protected, area cleaned, and the new system tested and walked through with you before we leave.
- Warranty
- Registered on the day Factory-authorised registration inside the 60-day window, which is what actually starts the 10-year parts coverage. Miss it and the coverage quietly isn't there when you need it.
Installed pricing for a typical 2,000 sq ft North Jersey home runs $6,995–$9,995 for a 14.3 SEER2 single-stage, $9,995–$13,995 for a 15–16 SEER2 two-stage, and $12,995–$18,995 for a 17–20 SEER2 variable-speed system. Ductwork, where it genuinely needs doing, adds $2,500–$6,000. Financing is 0% APR for 12 months on jobs over $1,500.

How do I know it's genuinely time to replace?
Replace if two or more are true: it's over fifteen years old, it runs on R-22, repairs have been over $500 a year for two years running, bills are climbing 10% a summer with no change in use, the compressor has failed, or a coil leak has been diagnosed. One of those on its own is usually a repair.
What does a replacement cost?
For a typical 2,000 sq ft home: $6,995–$9,995 for a 14.3 SEER2 single-stage, $9,995–$13,995 for a 15–16 SEER2 two-stage, and $12,995–$18,995 for a 17–20 SEER2 variable-speed. Ductwork adds $2,500–$6,000 where it's needed, which is a minority of jobs. Every quote is fixed and itemised before anything starts.
How long will I be without cooling?
One day for most replacements on existing ductwork, roughly 7am to 4pm. If new ductwork is involved it's two to three days. We tell you which one you're in before you commit, not on the morning.
Should I do the furnace at the same time?
Often it makes sense. A modern condenser needs a matched indoor coil to reach its rated efficiency, doing both in one visit saves $800 to $1,500 in labour against two separate jobs, and matched-system rebates are usually better. If the furnace is over fifteen it's likely to follow the A/C anyway.
What about rebates?
Federal credit up to $600 on 16+ SEER2 equipment and up to $2,000 on a qualifying heat pump. NJ Clean Energy pays $300 to $1,500. PSE&G and JCP&L add $100 to $500. Manufacturers run spring promotions worth $500 to $1,800. We file the paperwork.
