Cooling follows the same line. The forced-air houses can usually take a new central AC system on the existing ducts, although returns in that era are often undersized. The radiator houses have no ductwork, so we look at whether a duct system can be run through the attic and closets. If the layout does not support it we say so rather than force it.

Permits in Clifton: what's required and who files
New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code classifies a like-for-like replacement of a water heater, boiler, furnace or AC condenser as minor work under N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.17A. The practical meaning: the contractor gives the city notice before starting, files the permit within five business days, and an inspector still checks the finished installation. The paperwork is lighter, but the inspection still happens.
Work beyond a straight swap goes through the standard permit process. That covers new gas piping, moved equipment, new ductwork and any first-time central air system. New AC almost always needs a new electrical circuit and disconnect, which brings in the electrical subcode and a separate electrical inspection.
